Raising Godly Children Part 5

Raising Godly Children Part 5

 Teaching by Scripture

Today we will look at a few verses that talk about the importance of knowing scripture and using it to teach and correct.

Raising Godly Children   Part 1   Part 2   Part 3   Part 4   Part 6

2 Timothy 3:14-15(NIV)
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary
Those who would learn the things of God, and be assured of them, must know the Holy Scriptures, for they are the Divine revelation. The age of children is the age to learn; and those who would get true learning, must get it out of the Scriptures. They must not lie by us neglected, seldom or never looked into. The Bible is a sure guide to eternal life”
 Scripture makes us wise

Your children cannot be wiser than the teachings you are offering them.  Are you expecting more wisdom and better choices from your child than you are exposing them to in the Scriptures?

The Bible is our guide to eternal life so we must teach our children to cherish it.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

NIV16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

NLT16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

It is profitable for all purposes of the Christian life. It is of use to all, for all need to be taught, corrected, and reproved. There is something in the Scriptures suitable for every case. Oh that we may love our Bibles more, and keep closer to them! then shall we find benefit, and at last gain the happiness therein promised by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the main subject of both Testaments. We best oppose error by promoting a solid knowledge of the word of truth; and the greatest kindness we can do to children, is to make them early to know the Bible.

Everyone needs Biblical correction.

Every answer we seek can be found in the Scripture.

I must promote a solid knowledge of Scripture in my children to help them oppose error.

We can not use the Scriptures to teach, rebuke, correct, and train our children if we do not know them ourselves.  What are some verses that you would like to memorize so that you can easily recall them in training situations?

God uses Scripture to prepare us for His work so I should use Scripture to prepare my children.

Romans 10:17 (NIV)

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

“The gospel is given, not only to be known and believed, but to be obeyed. It is not a system of notions, but a rule of practice. The beginning, progress, and strength of faith is by hearing. But it is only hearing the word, as the word of God that will strengthen faith”

Faith is strengthened by hearing the Word.

How often are your kids reading/hearing Scripture?

What are some ways you can encourage your children to be in the word more?

Ephesians 6:17

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

“To the Christian armed for defense in battle, the apostle recommends only one weapon of attack; but it is enough, the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. It subdues and mortifies evil desires and blasphemous thoughts as they rise within; and answers unbelief and error as they assault from without. A single text, well understood, and rightly applied, at once destroys a temptation or an objection, and subdues the most formidable adversary.”

The Word of God is the only weapon we need.

It is my duty to instill Scripture into my children when they are young so they will be able to yield it as a weapon when needed to fight off evil desires, blasphemous thoughts, unbelief, and error.

Do you recognize the power that Scripture has to fight off evil?

Scripture is the most powerful weapon you can give your child as they prepare for spiritual warfare.

Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible

“the Scriptures in general are a sharp sword, in convincing of sin, reproving for it, and threatening with wrath and ruin, in refuting error and heresy, and repelling Satan’s temptations”

I need to use Scripture to correct my children and convince them of sinful behaviors.

Have you been using the Scriptures to explain to your children why their behavior/choices are wrong?

Lord, Help me to use Your word to teach my children.  Through Your word I can teach them right verse wrong, guide them through life, answer their questions, provide examples of situations similar to what they are going through, and most importantly show them that You are a loving, merciful God who sent His son to die for them.
